CHAPTER 9
TELLING THE TIME
A. Rules!
- In English, we use "past" to say times after the hour until half past, or 30 minutes past the hour. We also use "to" to say times before the hour from 31 minutes until the full hour.
Example:
10.30 à
It’s ten thirty or half past ten
12.15 à It’s twelve fifteen or quarter past
twelve
10.45 à It’s ten forty-five or quarter to
eleven
11.55 à It’s eleven fifty-five or five to twelve
- In English we use o'clock only at the full hour.
Example:
8.00 à
It's eight o'clock
12.00 à It’s twelve
o’clock
- When we talk about the different times of the day,
we often use: in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening.
Example:
4.25 pm à It’s twenty-five past four or four
twenty-five in the afternoon 5.55
am à
It’s five fifty-five or five to six in the morning
Note:
Be careful! In English, we use at night, NOT in the night.

C. Practice the monologue below!
I usually get
up at a 7.15 in the morning. I have breakfast at 8.00 then take
the bus to work at 8.30. I usually arrive at work at 8.45.
Sometimes, the bus is late and I arrive at about 9.00. My morning is
usually busy and I like taking a coffee break at 11.49 if possible.
I then work to lunchtime at noon. In the afternoon, I usually have
another break at 3.15. I usually finish work at 4.45 and arrive
home around 6.00 in the evening. At night, I usually go to bed at 11.00.
